For Gender Equality and Against Violence Against Women
Objectives, Call and Award Rules
On December 19, 2019, the Equality Unit of the University of Salamanca, in collaboration with the Cultural Activities Service and the Faculty of Fine Arts of the same University, announced in her memory the “I First Laura Luelmo Award for Contemporary Art, FOR GENDER EQUALITY AND AGAINST VIOLENCE ON WOMEN 2019”.
The aim of the award is to promote equality between women and men and the prevention and eradication of violence against women, paying tribute also to all women who have suffered or are suffering from this violence and to those who are fighting from different areas to eradicate this scourge from society and achieve real and effective equality.
This event was open to all students of the University of Salamanca with works of various manifestations of contemporary visual and plastic arts such as painting, sculpture, drawing, engraving, photography or audiovisual creations.
The period for submitting works was from 27 November to 2 December at the Cultural Activities Service of the Fonseca Hostelry. The verdict of the jury was made public on the USAL website, on the Equality Unit website, on the Cultural Activities Service website and on the USAL Faculty of Fine Arts website on 3 December 2019.
Jury decision, award ceremony and opening of the exhibition
The jury, meeting, chose the winning work and the two secondary awards on December 3, 2019. On 11 December, at a public event, which the family was unable to attend because this date was very close to the anniversary of the tragic event, the awards were given to the award-winning artists: Daniela Somoza Gabrieli, for “Sin Título” (1st Prize), second prize to María de la Fuente García, for “La vorágine del redil”, and third prize to María Luz Iglesias Álvarez, for “Petricor”. Then, the exhibition was inaugurated
The awarded works and the rest of the selected works was exhibited at the Sala de Exposiciones Espacio Experimental de la Hospedería Fonseca between December 11, 2019 and January 19, 2020. This exhibition also included an show of “Postcards for Laura”. The postcards (which were not eligible for the prize) and had a unique size, 10 x 18 cm, were made by members of the University of Salamanca and teachers / students of Secondary Education and Bachillerato in the same city and joined those ones which were exposed in March 2019 in Madrid, in the Exhibition held at the Center UNED Escuelas Pías, under the organization of the same entities, the Unit of Equality of the University of Salamanca in collaboration with the Association of Women Artists “White, Black and Magenta”.
Delivery of the “Postcards for Laura” to the family of the young artist

Once the exhibition was over and the works on display had been collected, in an emotional and beautiful private event on 29 February 2020, and with the presence of the Rector of the University of Salamanca, Mr Ricardo Rivero Ortega, together with Ms. Inmaculada Sánchez Barrios, Director of the Equality Unit and other members of the USAL, accompanied by Ms. Amalia Campos Juarez, representing the BNM association, Laura Luelmo’s family was given nearly 300 “Postcards for Laura” as well as the posters announcing the exhibition
